Urban Ecosystem, the Loggia: “Lost positions are not due to reduced performance”

Loggia answers, or rather clarifies, point by point, the chapters analyzed by Legambiente to compile the 2024 Urban Ecosystem ranking, in which Brescia has lost several positions compared to the previous edition. The administration follows the line followed by the Brescia club of the environmental association, saying that this is not a specific deterioration, but rather an update on the setting of bonuses.

Municipal information

The data that the municipality transmits to Legambiente every year are several hundred and refer to many areas. Those provided by Arpa and not directly by Loggia – as required by Legambiente – are those related to air quality.

In this regard, Arpa informed the environmental association that in Brescia the values of all required pollutants have improved compared to 2022: nitrogen dioxide from 30 µg/m3 to 29.2 (average annual value), PM10 from 32 to 29.67 Total days exceeding target values for µg/mc (annual average value), PM2.5 – 20.33 – 18.75 µg/mc (annual average value) and Ozone decreased from 85 to 62.

Domestic water consumption also improved from 2022 to 2023 (with a decrease in daily consumption liters per capita from 172.07 to 161.96). The percentage losses of drinking water entering the municipal distribution network are also reduced from 25% to 24%.

However, the city’s waste production per capita increased (from 507.3 to 517) because 2022 was a particularly dry year compared to 2023, with instead a significant increase in the share of green sludge thanks to abundant rains. , had led to more green production.

In 2023, 102,728.23 tons of waste were produced in Brescia, compared to 99,658.57 in 2022. The percentage of waste separation increased from 67.8 to 68.5% (from 67,587.93 to 72.39.93) as their tonnage. The percentage of separated waste sent for recycling remains constant at 100%.

The numbers sent to Legambiente also include pedestrian areas and roads with a 30 km/h limit.

The line of pedestrian streets went from km 4.5 to 6.85. A larger increase was recorded on roads with a 30 km/h limit, which increased from 101.9 linear km to 148.45. Bicycle lanes have also increased (in various types, i.e. own lane, dedicated lane, sidewalk and mixed use) from 102.5 linear kilometers to 107.2. Information on bicycle lanes is added here (this is a longitudinal section, by law, “located to the right of the road section, separated by a continuous white strip, intersecting and intended for mixed use, allowing the circulation of bicycles in the city. in the same direction of movement of other vehicles and marked “vecipede” roads marked with), go from 5.5 to 8.9 linear km.

Still, in terms of mobility, the average age of buses decreases significantly (from 11.47 to 8.39), and the number of passengers transported increases significantly (from 47 to 54 million people).

Finally, the questionnaire asks how many trees are on public property of the Municipality. The difference in the preliminary tree balance data between 2022 and 2023 (175,291 compared to 171,398 in 2023) is due to the fact that the census of all urban green plants was updated last year, whereas previously this figure was only provided by estimates. . More trees were cut in 2023 (451 compared to 349), but twice as many trees were planted as in 2022 (10,498 compared to 4,780). Thus, the total number of trees is mostly positive: 181,445 in 2023 against 179,722 in 2022.
