Land consumption: 137 hectares of agricultural land were lost in Brescia

There is no good news for Brescia and Lombardy in terms of land consumption. In fact, in the regular ISPRA report, a new growth emerges in 2023 and our area continues to lead.

It is not surprising that the Brescia-Bergamo-Milan route suffers the most land consumption, as it experiences the consequences of two main connections in Lombardy: the historic A4 and Brebemi. Very tasty infrastructures for logistics centers. In fact, more than half (52%) of the entire region’s land consumption is located in three provinces, with Brescia alone leading the way with 137 hectares of agricultural land converted to warehouses and roads in 2023.

In terms of absolute value, Brescia is first in Lombardy, third nationally after Rome and Turin with 50,281 hectares, and Milan is third with a few hectares less.

“The risk, – commented Legambiente – between Milan and Brescia, one piece at a time, will create a single, large ribbon of logistic and industrial plates, removing the agricultural activity and the richness of the natural and revitalizing environment”.

The heartfelt invitation of Barbara Meggetto, Lombardy president of the association, is to use the many abandoned sites: “Logistics warehouses and data centers continue to be built on green land, not on the many abandoned sites that surround our territory – she said – and in this way we lose twice: both agricultural land by wasting, but also by rejecting the possibilities of restoration of degraded areas”.
